In this second part of our series of identifying your unique skin type we will cover the various skin conditions plus you can take our easy quiz below to help make this determination very helpful.
What Skin Type Are You?
First of all, most people have what is known as “combination skin”– not just one type over their entire body and face.
Many factors are involved in determining your particular skin type … such as genetics, metabolism (what’s going on inside your body at your current age), plus various environmental influences.
Internal factors include your overall state of health (including the health of your skin), hormones, exercise, and what you eat and drink, and a few environmental influences, including air pollution, second-hand smoke, and even the harmful rays of the sun itself!
All these things can affect how we look.
Here’s a quick quiz you can give yourself that will help determine your skin type:
1. After cleansing, how does your skin feel?
(a) Tight and rough
(b) Smooth and supple
(c) Slightly oily
(d) Oily in some areas, tight in others
2. How often does your skin break out in spots?
(a) Almost never
(b) Rarely
(c) Often
(d) Only in the T -Zone (across the forehead and down the nose and chin).
3. Which of the following best describes your skin texture?
(a) Smooth and transparent
(b) Firm and even
(c) Slightly rough and uneven
(d) A mixture of the above.
4. How does your skin look during the day?
(a) Flaky and chapped
(b) Clean and fresh-looking
(c) Shiny
(d) Shiny in the T-Zone by the Afternoon
Now, add up how many a’s, b’s, c’s and d’s you have.
Mostly a’s = “dry” skin.
Mostly b’s = “normal” skin.
Mostly c’s = “oily” skin.
Mostly d’s = “combination” skin.
The Right Cleanser for You
The first critical step in cleansing takes place before you even touch your face.
Make sure that you purchase a quality pH-balanced cleanser, which is formulated specifically for your skin type.
For any skin type, it will be important to choose products that contain as many natural ingredients as possible.
After cleansing, you then want to apply a serum, followed by a moisturizer that is appropriate for your particular skin type, a sunscreen moisturizer during the day, and a repairing type of light moisturizer at bedtime.
IMPORTANT: do not saturate the skin at night because it needs to breathe and repair itself while you sleep.
Around the eye area, gently apply a cream that contains Vitamin C and moisturizing properties.
Be careful never to pull or rub-in the product in the delicate under eye area.
Instead, use a smooth stroking motion from below the eyes to the outside corner of the bridge of the nose.
Always remember that moisturizing in the under eye area is very important because the skin ages faster in this area than on other parts of the face.
